1.The Glass Mazu Temple
Construction of the Glass Mazu Temple started in 2007. After five years of work it was opened to the public on 31 March 2012 with a ceremony hosted by the President of Taiwan. The temple celebrates the benevolence of Mazu.
Utilizing good industrial technique and modern electronic technology, a consortium of Taiwanese glass manufacturers sought to honor religious formality, civic ritual, and traditional workmanship – while, at the same time, promoting cultural innovation and ecological preservation.
The challenges were legion. It is the first glass temple in the world, a spiritual center for the people of Taiwan, and a glowing monument to the glass industry here. The name of the temple was given by the King of Heaven himself, to be Taiwan Husheng Temple, which celebrates the great skills of Taiwanese artisans.
Other works by the consortium of glass manufacturers include the Glass Sedan Chair, the Galss Mazu Boat, the Mobil Glass Temple, the Sun-Moon Heaven-Earth Tunnel, and the Tourism Train – which are mobile works of art available at no cost to be displayed in religious festivities or carnivals upon invitation.
2. The Glass Divine Sedan Chair
The Glass Divine Sedan Chair is the creation of seven glass manufacturers along with two polytech colleges in collaboration with a well-know artist Mr. Wei-kwan Kang. It measures 5 feet long, 5 feet wide and 7 feet in height. It is made of Formosa Cypress and customized glasses pieces and took 42 days to complete.
3.The Glass Mazu Boat
The Glass Mazu Boat measures 12 meters long, 3 meters wide and 4.1 meters tall and weights 8 metric tons. The hull is recycled from a retired fishing boat. The blue and white painting on the hull represents splashing waves. The Genie of the Sea – Formosa White Dolphin, on the gunwale swims alongside the boat. The Alpha Dragon on both sides of the bow offers protection to all Taiwan. The island is depicted in gold plate on the center of the bow.
The design of the boat took two months and the construction took four months. A total of 7,200 pieces of custom-made glass were assembled for the boat. The entire cost came to $3.6 millions NT.
4. Mobil Glass Temple
The Mobil Glass Temple is the vehicle of peace and good fortune. The design of the float took three months and the construction took another three months. Further woodwork and glasswork (720 large pieces of stained glass) took additional four months to complete. The LED lighting took another two months to complete. The cost came to $9.6 millions NT. It was christened at the grand entrance of the Taiwan Husheng Temple on Lunar New Year’s Eve in 2013. Two weeks later it was transported to be on display at the Taiwan Lantern Festival in Hsinchu. The Mobil Glass Temple features a miniature Taiwan Husheng Temple, with Mazu portrayed within. It is mounted on a coach bus platform and measures at 42 feet in length, 9.5 feet in width and 12.8 feet in height. It is comprised of front stairs, entrance gate, worship hall and main hall. It offers a place for worshippers to pay respect to Mazu.
The Taiwan Hushen Temple worships Mazu. Her divine title is “Savior of All Beings, Goddess of Grace”. She is commanded by the King of Heaven to offer grace, promote virtue, alleviate suffering, and save all beings from sinful behavior. Her power derives from her ancestors, her heritage, her birthplace and her compassion toward fishermen especially. The inception of the Taiwan Huseng Temple Heavenly Goddess of Grace elevates the religious belief in Taiwan to a new level.
5. Mount Jade
The Taiwan Husheng Temple was the join effort of 66 companies that specialize in various materials. It is the result of intense brainstorming and innovation. All seventy thousand pieces of glass were produced by a unique method involving hand made molds and manually formed assembly. The 3-dimensional God of Mount Jade alone is comprised of 1400 pieces of glass measuring at 10mm in thickness apiece. The achievement is a testament to amazing advances in industrial workmanship and technique, and represents the natural beauty of the tallest mountain in the Far East – Mount Jade.
